The First bi-annual NEH Community Deep Mapping Symposium!
​The first bi-annual symposium is growing a community of practice by bringing together deep mapping scholars and practitioners from around the world to discuss and apply cutting edge community centered deep mapping methodologies to community centered deep maps. Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn about the Community Deep Mapping Institute Fellowship Program in 2027. A full schedule of events can be found below.

Preliminary Symposium Schedule

Monday, September 28th
  • Arrive in Sumter, SC - Check in to Hyatt Place Hotel
  • 7pm: Community Deep Mapping Institute Fellow Reunion & Social Drop-in​
Tuesday, September 29th
  • 8am - 8:45am: Breakfast & Welcome to the Community Deep Mapping Institute Symposium
  • 8:45am - 9:00am: Walk to The Meeting House at Memorial Park
  • 9am - 12:30pm: 2025 Institute Deep Mapping Team Presentations (30-45 minutes each)
Lunch
  • 1:30pm - 4pm: Symposium Participant Presentations
  • 4pm - 6:30pm: Sumter Tours: Placemaking, Deep Mapping and the Wood Basket Deep Mapping Project - with Drewry Penn the last general manager of Williams Furniture & Sumter Cabinet
  • 6:30pm: Reception sponsored by Sumter Economic Development & The Link
Wednesday, September 30th
  • 9am - Noon: Workshop - Scoping your Deep Map (establishing partnerships, finding funding, access, processing and spatializing data, technological tools)
Lunch
  • 1pm - 3pm: Deep Mapping Workshops (AI and Deep Mapping, Teaching with/for Deep Mapping, and Developing Community Partnerships)
  • 3pm - 6pm: Tours of Congaree National Park - with John Grego, Naturalist, and President of Friends of Congaree Swamp
  • 6:30pm: Dinner
