Dr. Don Lafreniere (Project Director) began the conference as a roundtable participant with other scholars from the U.S. and U.K. discussing models for building and sustaining Historical GIS projects. He also shared the next stages of the Keweenaw Time Traveler project, highlighting our recently released mobile app. He demonstrated this by importing a map segment of Chicago that allowed participants to see the historic Palmer House (where the conference was held) just as we can see towns around the Copper Country!

Picture
Dr. Dan Trepal (Senior Geospatial Research Scientist) presented recent work linking people’s census records through time. This allows us to follow people as they move throughout the area and country and sets the stage for lots of future projects!
James Juip (Senior Research Associate) participated in a roundtable discussing a variety of projects related to place and attachment. This touched on a variety of subjects, including project sustainability and how to continue public engagement after funding has ceased.

James was also joined remotely by Dr. Sarah Scarlett (Co-Project Director) for a presentation on education and outreach, during which they discussed how the Time Traveler has been used for K-12 education and some exciting future plans (stay tuned!).
Timothy Stone (Senior Research Associate) presented an abridged version of his thesis which he defended two weeks ago. Here he focused on results and case studies, demonstrating how projects such as the Time Traveler allow for population-level and fined-grained analysis.

Ryan Williams (Geospatial Research Scientist) presented his work and partnership with Monte Consulting to bring us version 2.0 of the Explore App (i.e. the current Time Traveler Interface). He also discussed the relationship between the databases housing Time Traveler data and the public interface.

The Keweenaw Time Traveler team is partnering with the Chassell Heritage Center to help build interactive digital interpretation for the new Chassell historic interpretive trail. The trail will run from Chassell Township Park along Pike Bay and through the former site of a lumber mill. Using maps and aerial imagery The Time Traveler will give people unique insight into how the site changed from 1893 to the present day as they travel down the new boardwalk trail. Through story points created by the Chassell Heritage Center team guests to the park will also be informed about the unique value this site has to the history of the Copper Country.  You can learn more about this amazing project by visiting the Chassell Heritage Center on Facebook, or through this excellent 'Discovering' Episode from 906 Outdoors found below. Be sure to check out this great trail and be sure to bring keweenawhistory.com along!

This week, Dr. Dan Trepal (Senior Geospatial Research Scientist) had the opportunity to present on work he is doing in Hamtramck, Michigan. Hamtramck is located in Wayne County and has a rich industrial and cultural history which Wayne State archaeology students have been unearthing since 2018. During his Archaeology Day presentation, Dr. Trepal discussed the deep mapping used to create the Keweenaw Time Traveler, and the vision for a similar project with Hamtramck which he is working on with Dr. Krysta Ryzewski, who is the Chair of the Department of Anthropology at Wayne State. This project will focus more on archeological data collected at Hamtramck sites while maintaining the flexibility and easy access we are proud to offer with the Keweenaw Time Traveler.

Time Travelers at the Association for Preservation Technology

This week, Dr. John Arnold (Co-Project Director) and Dr. Don Lafreniere (Project Director) travelled to Detroit, Michigan to present at the Association for Preservation Technology’s annual conference. Dr. Arnold, who now works with the Keweenaw National Historic Park, continues to focus on ‘vernacular preservation,’ which he discussed at length in his dissertation in 2017. This means working with the community to preserve buildings and other parts of the physical landscape that aren’t necessarily known for their historic uses and may be used to this day.
Picture
Dr. Arnold and Dr. Lafreniere showed many of these local buildings (such as the Copper Country Curling Club) and discussed the various levels of attention and assistance they get for preservation before introducing how projects like the Keweenaw Time Traveler can help! By having a detailed record of the built landscape, we can easily and accurately assess historic value and tell the stories of the buildings that continue to shape our communities!

This Friday, Dr. Don Lafreniere (Project Director) presented the Keweenaw Time Traveler at Northern Michigan University (available here). NMU puts on an annual event, called the Sonderegger Symposium, which focuses on the social aspects (and challenges) of the Upper Peninsula. While there, Dr. Lafreniere discussed the creation of the Time Traveler and its importance for helping local history come to life through historical maps and data linkages. The next phase of the project, which we are incredibly excited about, involves bringing our methods and lessons learned to other communities and helping jumpstart similar projects. He was also able to demonstrate how to use the Time Traveler, with all the different types of maps and data available.

Successful Defenses!

11/3/2022

Time Travelers James Juip and Timothy Stone completed successful defenses in early November.
Picture
James, defending his Ph.D. proposal, shared his vision for using deep maps to help generate engagement with local history. Using platforms such as the Keweenaw Time Traveler, James hopes to help communities and community members take ownership of their history and provide them with a means to preserve and share their stories and memories.

Picture
Timothy, defending his Master’s thesis, discussed his work with the Calumet and Laurium school records and how he used them to study local children’s environmental exposures from 1920. He presented a methodology for incorporating children’s data into an existing HSDI and argued that research on children’s exposures should focus on all activity spaces, rather than just exposures at home.

Gary Spikberg presenting his work on French-Canadian Migration out of the Keweenaw
This week Time Travelers Gary Spikberg, Brooke Batterson, and Sarah Scarlett presented their work at a conference in Winnipeg, Manitoba hosted by the Three Centuries of Francophone Migration in North America (1640-1940) project (Which the Keweenaw Time Traveler is a partner).
Picture
Gary presented his work entitled The French-Canadian Migration Experience in the Keweenaw.  His work mapped the outmigration of French-Canadians from the Keweenaw as the region deindustrialized from 1910-1940.  The map below shows where the majority of French-Canadians migrated to, largely the industrial cities of the Great Lakes Region.

Sarah and Brooke presented their work entitled "Materializing Social Mobility in the Houses of Francophone Migrants in Michigan's Copper Country".  In their work they highlight how to use homes as a way of understanding how socially mobile (ie- better off) Francophone's were when they arrived in the Keweenaw versus where they came from.  Brooke discussed her oral history project where she has been conducting interviews with French-Canadian descendants with the help of the Chassell Heritage Organization to understand how the French language has disappeared in local families over time.

A mobile version of the Keweenaw Time Traveler is finally here!

A walk in the Copper Country, especially with fall arriving, can be a beautiful experience. It can also raise questions about our past. What is this stone foundation I just found in the woods?  Did this trail used to be a railroad? Who can tell me more about this place?
The Keweenaw Time Traveler Team has been hard at work developing a new mobile version that helps you explore those questions. It brings the upgraded interface released for the desktop in June 2022 to your smart devices.
When you go out exploring, use the new Keweenaw Time Traveler Mobile Storytelling platform to:
  • Access historical maps of the places you visit
  • Use GPS to see your current location on historical maps
  • Use the transparency slider to see how your location has changed over time
  • Explore stories, memories, and information shared by other users
  • Share your own experiences!
Picture

Maps and Stories are the focus of the mobile version. You will see orange “Story” points, which are histories, memories, photographs, videos and more, shared by fellow Time Travelers. We hope these stories can help answer questions about the changing Keweenaw landscape and spark some of your own ideas. From your location on the trail or the sidewalk, select the “Share a Story” button to open an easy dialog box. Then, use pictures, audio, video as well as text live from your phone to create your own “Story” point. Sharing your knowledge, perspective, and experiences makes the Time Traveler even better for everyone!
Be sure to visit the Keweenaw Time Traveler desktop version at www.keweenawhistory.com to access mapped historical data from the Federal Census, city directories, school records, and more.
We are proud to share the Keweenaw Time Traveler Mobile Storytelling platform app with you. Enjoy exploring, learning, and sharing your perspectives with the community near and far!
We look forward to the stories and memories you share with us as you travel through the beautiful Copper Country we call home.
